The vine represents the sacrament and the blood of Christ. It is a symbol of both youth and eternal life. The central carved panel is surrounded by finely detailed border. The brooch would have been worn at the neck on a high Victorian collar.

A Victorian Whitby Jet brooch with a carved IMO (In Memory Of) motif on the front.
The brooch measures 4cm (1-1/2") by 3.5cm (1-3/8") and is fitted with a pin and 'c' clasp fastening mounted on a brass plate. Horn was used extensively during the 19th century to manufacture a wide range of jewellery including brooches and pendants. The material was easily worked and could be moulded when heated. When carefully stained the items were difficult to tell apart from real Jet.
