A Victorian silver mourning locket with cross and monogram. Inside the locket there is a photograph of a young Victorian woman.
The locket has an engraved cross on the front and the back is engraved with letters that look like an M, I and two R's back to back.
Inside the locket there is space for two photographs but only one side is occupied. The locket measures 3.5cm (1-3/8"), excluding the silver bale, and is 2.8cm (1-1/16") wide. It is in excellent vintage condition and closes securely. This is a very slender locket and is just 4mm (1/8") thick.

The locket measures 4.3cm (1-5/8"), excluding the silver bale, and is 3.4cm (1-1/4") wide. It is in excellent vintage condition and closes securely. There is just one very tiny dent on the side with the flower but this is really only noticeable on very close inspection.

This square shaped locket is marked 9ct Front and Back and 'Silver Setting'. It has space inside for two photographs or other tokens.
The locket measures 2.5cm (1") square, excluding the bamboo style mount and loop. Overall thickness is just 4mm (1/8").
The locket has a few minor dents to one edge on the front and the back is slightly concave with a number of small dents where the locket has been placed in a jewellery box with other items. However this is still a very wearable piece and the defects on the front are not noticeable except on close examination.

Victorian 9ct Gold and Enamel Double Sided Locket Ref: CAT298
A small Victorian double sided mourning locket with black enamel detail, circa 1880. This is a high quality piece of mourning jewellery, which is intricately engraved both front and back.
As was often the case with Victorian items there are no visible hallmarks. The front and back of the locket are gold of at least 9ct but possibly higher. The centre section, which houses the two pictures, will be gold alloy to give the locket strength. There are two Victorian photographs of a man and woman and the glasses and fittings are original.
The locket measures 2.3cm (7/8") excluding the loop and is 1.8cm (11/16") wide. Overall thickness is 0.8cm (5/16") and it is in excellent condition with just one very tiny dent to the bottom edge. The enamel is all intact.

 | Victorian 9ct Gold and Enamel Locket Ref: CAT307
A very well detailed Victorian 9ct gold mourning locket with black enamel, dated 1883.
The front of the locket has a cross, belt and buckle and leaf motif picked out in black enamel. This motif is almost identical to the one used on the Order of the Garter Star. This has a close associated with retired army officers and the locket may have been commissioned in memory of one of these gentlemen. The belt and buckle motif also symbolises friendship or love, as the closed belt implies unity.
The reverse is very finely engraved with another belt and buckle surrounding three initials and beautifully detailed forget me-not-flowers. The reverse is also engraved with the words "Died March 1883. Inside the locket there is a picture of a Victorian gentleman.
The locket measures 3.5cm (excluding loop) and is 2.8cm wide. It is in excellent condition with no dents or loss to the enamel.

A very well detailed Victorian 9ct gold mourning locket with black enamel, circa 1880.
The front of the locket has the words 'In Memory Of' picked out in black enamel. In the centre of the locket their is a star design chased into the gold.
The reverse is very finely engraved with flowers surrounding a small cartouche with the letters 'JEB'. Inside the locket their are pictures of a man and woman. The glass over the photograph of the woman has been broken and I have replaced it with acrylic.
The locket measures 2.5cm (1"), excluding the gold jump ring, and is 2cm (3/4") wide. It is in very good condition with just one slight loss to the enamel, which is only visible under very close inspection.

A Victorian hard stone Pietra Dura brooch with Garnet border, circa 1880.
This well executed design features forget me not flowers and is a typical 'grand tour' Victorian keepsake. The stone is inside what appears to be a gold border. However this is untested and therefore sold as 'gold tone'.
Around the edge of the stone are 22 Garnets in claw settings.
These items were often worn by Victorian women at the throat, fastened to high collars.

This very detailed Victorian brooch is made of brass, with what I believe is a silver finish on the front. The coating has a slight gold tone, as can bee seen in the picture, and it seems to change colour slightly from silver to gold depending on the light.
The brooch is very pretty and has remarkable detail. On the reverse the brooch shows the base metal and has a pin and 'c' clasp fastening. It is also stamped with a registered mark (number 55350), which dates the design to 1886

This is a very pretty mourning brooch and the pictures do not do it justice. The downward pointing horseshoe depicts a loss of luck and was often used to symbolise the death of a loved one. The brooch could be worn upside down for luck.
Niello is a black enamel made by mixing sulphur, lead and silver and sometimes copper. The material was first invented by the Egyptians and was also used extensively by 15th century goldsmiths in Florence to embellish their work.

Edwardian Silver Brooch with 9ct Rose Gold Detail Ref: CAT360
An Edwardian silver brooch with rose gold detail. The central design features what looks like the Isle of Man symbol. However the legs are in the wrong orientation as they are a mirror image when compared to the IoM flag and crest.
The design of three linked legs is known as a Triscele or Triskele and was an Egyptian symbol of revival. It is also thought to be a solar symbol; an expression of the suns movement in relation to the earth. This association with the sun makes this a portent fro good and a symbol of prosperity and good fortune.
